Suzhou (in simplified Chinese ??) was called Wu in the past. Due to different historical reasons, Suzhou also had the names like Gusu, Wu Do, Wu Zhong, Dong Wu, Wu Jiang, etc.

During the Xui Dynasty, in AD 589, a final decision was made and the city was called Suzhou. It was named as Suzhou, because it is a city southwest of Suzhou Hill. After that, the name of this city is called Suzhou up to now. Suzhou is one of the mega-cities of the People’s Republic of China. Approved by the State Council, it is one of the “Large Cities” in China. It is also one of the provincial cities of Jiangsu Province, and it is Jiangsu Province’s logistic, industrial and commercial city. On the other hand, Suzhou is also important to Jiangsu Province in terms of culture, arts, education and transportation. Among all the little cities of Suzhou like Changshu, Kunshan, Wujiang City, Taicang City, Zhangjiagang City, many of them are top in the country. Kunshan and Changshu even occupied the first and third place according to the statistic in 2006.

Moreover, Suzhou is China’s famous historical and cultural city. There have always been beautiful landscapes which are famous in the world. Many people have praised that the scenery of Suzhou is very great and it is even comparable with those in southern China.

By the end of the year 2006, the city’s total population was 6,160,814, of whom 2,301,497 were living in the municipal districts. The city in 2006 received 46,325 births and the birth rate was 7.57 percent. On the other hand, Suzhou had 7214 of natural population growth, and the growth rate was 1.18 ‰. Under the jurisdiction of Suzhou City, there are Zhangjiagang City, Changshu, Taicang, Kunshan, Wujiang City, Wuzhong District, With City, Pinjiang District, Canglang Area and Huqiu District. In 1993, Suzhou has been approved by the State Council as a “large city.”

As mentioned above, Suzhou has a lot of beautiful scenery. Therefore, tourism is one of the supporting industries of this city. In the future, it is expected to grow more rapidly.
